“HEAL THE HOOD”
An afternoon of music, discussion, and another step towards “Healing The Hood.” Main speaker: T. Rodgers, PhG in Gangology, author, actor and South Central community leader. Performing are local artists Boss Youngin, Semi Auto, Miss Aquarius, and (NJ’s) Quest Money. T. Rodgers is a non-traditional leader who founded Sidewalk University a community based consulting organization. The organization grew into a strategy that empowers disenfranchised communities.This is not just another discussion; it is a gathering of young men and women whose lives have been directed by violence. They are united as part of a greater movement to change the course of their future. From T. Rodgers they are gaining the knowledge that they need to take their lives in a new direction. MFA Columbus Day Open House
The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (MFA) marks Columbus Day with a FREE Open House from 10 a.m.-4:45 p.m. Visitors are invited to take a global journey through several special exhibitions and the MFA’s wonderfully diverse collection. Discover the “Art of Movement” through a collaboration with the Boston Ballet. The Museum will feature performances by Ballet soloists John Lam and Melissa Hough as they reinterpret art work through dance. Additionally, in conjunction with the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, the Museum will highlight music from the Caribbean as a celebration of the exhibition America’s Paradise and ‘Isla Del Encanto’: Contemporary Art from the American Caribbean. A lively calypso and reggae performance will complement the richness of the works on view. Art activities for children will include an exploration of musical instruments and sketching movement. Guided gallery tours will also be offered throughout the day and are available to those who are hearing impaired, blind, or have low vision. Avenue of the Arts, 465 Huntington Ave., Boston. An Evening with Andover
Join Boys & Girls Clubs of Boston for “An Evening with Andover,” a program that will provide information on the Beacon Academy high school prep year program and the Phillips Academy private boarding high school. The presentation will be held at the Yawkey Club, 115 Warren St., Roxbury, from 4 p.m.–5:30 p.m. Robert Greene of Beacon Academy, and José W. Powell, Assistant Dean of Admission at the Phillips Academy, will present information on their programs and answer guests’ questions. Echoes of Abolition Across the Sea
Connections between the Abolition Movements in the United Kingdom and in the United States, with a special emphasis on the role of women in both nations. 5:30 p.m. doors open, light refreshment; 6:00 p.m. program.
