Eastern Nazarene College to Present Roots Music Concert
Sweet the Sound, an eight-piece band featuring fiddle, bass, guitar, piano, and vocalists, will be performing a free concert of old-time acoustic music at 8 p.m. at Eastern Nazarene College. The concert, which is part of ENC’s Musica Eclectica Concert Series, will be held in the Mann Student Center Auditorium on the ENC campus at 23 East Elm Ave., Quincy. Admission is free, but donations for the Beechwood Knoll Elementary School’s Visual and Performing Arts Community will be welcomed. Children and families are encouraged to attend. Parking is free. Sweet the Sound (www.sweetthesound.com) is dedicated to finding, making, performing, and recording American folk, gospel, blues, country, bluegrass, “old time,” shape note, spirituals, and other forms of American sacred music. “Roots music” fans will enjoy hearing some of the traditional songs featured in films like “O Brother, Where Art Thou?” and “Cold Mountain.” Sweet the Sound has performed for enthusiastic audiences across New England.

Broomstones Curling Club Fall 2007 Open House
Come out for a FREE introduction to Broomstones and the exciting sport of curling. Friday, October 12 7-9 p.m., Saturday October 13 and Sunday October 14 1-5 p.m. Broomstones Curling Club, 138 Rice Rd., Wayland (between Routes 20 and 30, approximately 5 miles west of Rte 128). 9th Annual Roxbury Open Studios Celebrates Community Artists
Explore the works of more than 150 Roxbury artists by visiting their studios and group show locations on Saturday and Sunday, October 13 & 14. Roxbury Open Studios (ROS) is free and open to the public. Locations include Dudley Square, Egleston Square, Fort Hill, Grove Hall, Lower Roxbury, Mission Hill and Walnut Park. Locations are within walking distance of the Orange, Silver and Green (E) Lines. There will be free shuttles between all sites. Works for sale include photography, paintings, quilts, jewelry, sculpture, mixed media, home décor, accessories and much, much more. Roxbury Jazz Nights
Join the Yawkey Boys & Girls Club, 115 Warren Street, Roxbury, for “Roxbury Jazz Nights,” an evening of jazz and refreshments from 9 p.m. – midnight. The event, for adults 21+, aims to provide an alternative, safe night of entertainment for the Roxbury community. Entertainment will be provided by the Corey Goldsmith Quintet and the Jeff Fajardo Group, both Berklee College of Music student groups, in the Club’s Suffolk Education Center. Admission is free, with a suggested $5 donation to benefit Boys & Girls Clubs of Boston’s Yawkey Club and its programs that serve at-risk youth. Free parking also is available. New England Wild Flower Society’s FALL FAMILY FESTIVAL
Celebrate this beautiful time of autumn color and ripening at Garden in the Woods, featuring 1,500 kinds of native plants. Go on a scavenger hunt to seek out some fall treasures, see the ART GOES WILD show and circle the labyrinth, make a miniature garden in a dish to take home, meet some surprise creatures in the Garden, and learn about nature’s animal adaptations in one of our live animal programs. Stop by the Museum Store for beautiful toys and gifts, including holiday gifts for teachers. All purchases support plant conservation. 12-4 p.m. rain or shine. THE BOSTON GUITAR PROJECT: An Organ Benefit Concert by the United Parish in Brookline
The Boston Guitar Project, featuring guitarists Steven Lin, Jérôme Mouffe and Erik Puslys, will present a concert of solo and chamber music at 3 p.m. The special guest artist will be Ona Jonaityte on flute. Selections will include solo and chamber works by Astor Piazzolla, J.S. Bach, Agustin Barrios, Antonio Lauro and Guilio Regondi. The Boston Guitar Project was founded in 2005 by a group of students at New England Conservatory of Music who sought to share their love of guitar music. They are committed to sharing solo classical and folk guitar music with the community and contribute to many fundraising activities throughout the Boston area. The United Parish’s historic E.M. Skinner organ was the last symphonic style organ designed and overseen by Skinner himself. The organ is now undergoing urgently needed restoration, and the United Parish is carrying out a series of benefit concerts to support this crucial work. Financial contributions to the organ fund will be accepted at the door. Suggested donation is $10. The United Parish is located at 210 Harvard St. near Coolidge Corner and is handicapped accessible. Following the concert, there will be a reception in the church parlor with an opportunity to meet the musicians. Roslindale Day Parade
“Make It In Roslindale” is the theme of the 32nd Annual Roslindale Day Parade, stepping off at 1 p.m. from Washington and South Streets in Roslindale Village. The parade will feature marching bands, including Branches Steel Orchestra, Estrellas Tropicales, and the Aleppo Temple Riding Brass Band,along with children’s costumed cartoon characters, classic cars, floats, and much more. “Black Invention and Technology”
The traffic light, the Super Soaker, the light bulb, the golf tee and the automatic transmission, are just a few of the many devices that were invented by African-Americans. Northeastern University’s John D. O’Bryant African-American Institute Library, Brothers About Change and Black Engineering Student Society invites the community to a showcase of “Black Invention and Technology” from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. This event will be held in the Amilcar Cabral Center, 40 Leon St., Northeastern’s campus.
