Overcoming Apartheid’s Legacy: Education Reform and Literacy Development in South Africa
This presentation will discuss the legacy of apartheid and its continuing impact on South Africa’s education system. The South African government’s policy of rigid racial segregation from 1948 until 1996 meant daily indignities for non-whites who had to carry a pass, forced removal from their homelands, inferior education and health care, and rigid restrictions in jobs and travel. A unique program sponsored by South Africa Partners, Inc., a non-profit organization dedicated to the establishment of mutually beneficial institutional partnerships between the United States and South Africa, has worked with a cluster of 11 primary schools in a rural area adjacent to the University of Fort Hare School. The School of Library Sciences is working with these schools to train teachers/librarians. These primary schools are receiving technical assistance to establish teacher/librarian training, staff support, and small grants to purchase new books. Lesley University, University Hall, Amphitheater 2-150, 1815 Massachusetts Ave., Cambridge. 3 – 5 p.m. This event is free and open to the public.
