Stay in School!
The Yawkey Boys & Girls Club, 115 Warren St., Roxbury, will host a fun, two-hour workshop 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. with tips and skills to help students in grades 5-12 stay in school. The workshop features the authors of “Stop Flunking,” as well as instruction in speed reading, memory strategies, learning styles, free tutoring information and organization skills. Guests can win prizes by attending the workshop, such as a Boost Mobile phone or a $50 grocery store gift certificate. Refreshments and babysitting services will be provided for guests and their families, and teens must be accompanied by an adult. The event is free and open to the community. Boys & Girls Clubs of Boston’s Yawkey Club and the Boston Learning Center are sponsors of the workshop. The Boston Conservatory Presents Children’s Opera Jack and The Beanstalk
The Boston Conservatory Opera presents a weekend of children’s performances of Jack and the Beanstalk, an operatic version of the classic tale of the same name. The opera, based on an adaptation by John Davies with music by Sir Arthur Sullivan,will be performed Saturday, October 20 at noon and 2 p.m. at the Conservatory’s Seully Hall, 8 The Fenway, 4th floor, Boston. In addition, The Boston Conservatory Opera returns to Brookline with a special performance on Sunday, October 21 at 10:30 a.m. at the historic Coolidge Corner Theatre, 290 Harvard St. Admission to the Coolidge Corner Theatre performance is $8 for adults and $6 for children 12 and under. Tickets are available in advance at the Coolidge Corner Theatre box office or through www.coolidge.org. The 45-minute show is geared toward children in grades K-6.

Leadership Today: What Shakespeare Can Teach Us
If Shakespeare were alive today, he could teach us a tremendous amount about leadership. That’s the theme of a free public lecture at Simmons College, in Boston, by the acclaimed Shakespearean director and actor Tina Packer, founder and artistic director of Shakespeare & Company in Lenox, Mass. The lecture, “What Shakespeare Can Teach Us About Leadership Today,” is at 5:00 p.m. in the Kotzen Meeting Room of Lefavour Hall, 300 The Fenway at Simmons College. Packer studied at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art and has directed all of Shakespeare’s plays. She is the author of “Tales from Shakespeare,” which won a Parents’ Choice award, and “Power Plays: Shakespeare’s Lessons in Leadership and Management.” Due to construction, parking on Simmons’s campus is limited. “The Colors of Jews Racial Politics and Radical Diasporism”
Melanie Kaye/Kantrowitz exposes and challenges the common assumptions about whom and what Jews are, by presenting in their own voices, Jews of color from the Iberian Peninsula, Asia, Africa, and India. Kaye/Kantrowitz argues that Jews are an increasingly multiracial people — a fact that, if acknowledged and embraced, could foster cross-race solidarity to help combat racism. 7 p.m. at Simmons College, Linda K.
