“L” Street Brownies to Swim Again New Year’s Day
South Boston’s oldest tradition continues as hundreds of swimmers dive into Boston Harbor for the annual “L Street Brownies New Year’s Day Swim.” Hosted by the Curley Community Center, 1663 Columbia Rd. in South Boston, the swim takes place at the “K” Street entrance of the center. The swim starts at 9 a.m. Doors open at 7:30 a.m. and close at 10:30 a.m. Use of the men’s and women’s locker and shower rooms will be available. This event has taken place for over 100 years. This year’s theme is “Southie Pride,” celebrating the fortitude of an “L” Street Brownie and South Boston residents. Creative costumes are encouraged. Both swimmers and spectators are welcome. Enjoy the day, take pictures of these self-proclaimed “health nuts” and have a few laughs. Everyone is an “L” Street Brownie on New Year’s Day. Any “Brownie” donations from the swim go to the South Boston Sports Hall of Fame Scholarship Fund. For more information, please contact Fred Ahern, Director of the Curley Community Center or Jack Dever, President of the “L” Street Brownies at 617-635-5104.
