Smith’s ‘Legend’ grows with $77.2M debut


LOS ANGELES — For the last man on Earth, Will Smith sure has a lot of friends.

The Warner Bros. tale “I Am Legend,” starring Smith as a plague survivor who may be the last living human, debuted with $77.2 million, the biggest December opening ever and a personal best for one of Hollywood’s top box-office champs.

“It’s no wonder Will Smith feels so lonely. Everyone else on Earth is in the movie theater,” said Paul Dergarabedian, president of box-office tracker Media By Numbers. Full story

African ‘Sisters’ take ‘Law’ into own hands

On the rare occasions that Western media actually mention the plight of African women, the references usually focus on their helplessness against the ever-accelerating downward spiral of poverty, HIV/AIDS and war crimes.

Berklee hosts eclectic concert featuring our northern neighbors

Canada came to the Berklee College of Music last Wednesday night, and it came bearing presents for music lovers of all stripes.

Indie rock group The New Pornographers drew devoted fans from around the city and genre-bending hip-hop artist k-os performed to a crowd of enthusiasts that leapt out of the theater-style seats in the Berklee Performance Center, after Bill King’s Saturday Nite Fish Fry blasted out a rousing set of blues and gospel spirituals to open the evening.
