New Boston School Superintendent to Speak at Freedom House.
Students and parents from Roxbury, Dorchester, and Mattapan will convene at Freedom House, Inc. at 14 Crawford St. in Roxbury, from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. as part of a grass-roots movement to reform education in the Boston Public School system. Mayor Thomas Menino and new School Superintendent Dr. Carol R. Johnson have accepted an invitation from Freedom House Project Listen Student Leaders to speak at the free conference called Students and Parents United to Reform Education: Taking Back Our Education. Conference highlights include a keynote address from Superintendent Johnson and workshops which will focus on: the achievement gap which persists between students of color and their white counterparts; the rising drop-out rate; and the role of the community in reforming the public education system. Boston Children’s Theatre
holds open auditions for Pinocchio
Talented young people in grades 4 through high school are invited to audition for Boston Children’s Theatre’s (BCT) upcoming production of Pinocchio, the timeless story of the puppet who wants to become a real boy. Audition dates are Sunday, September 30, 5–7 .pm. and Monday, October 1, 6:30-8:30 p.m. at BCT’s office at 321 Columbus Ave. (between Clarendon & Dartmouth Streets) in Boston. Callbacks will be held on Tuesday, Oct. 2. Rehearsals will be held four evenings per week for 11 weeks. Boston Children’s Theatre is the only performing arts organization in Boston whose mission is to provide live theatre opportunities exclusively for young people.
