303 Loft Series
Acoustic music performance and open mic. 7 p.m., $10 admission. Open mic sign-up begins at 6:30 p.m. The 303 Loft Series started out as an idea to run a small house concert series in one of the lofts in Downtown Lowell. The purpose of the series is to give acoustic performance artists a welcoming and friendly venue to perform while building community in Lowell and the surrounding areas. Memorial Day
Walking Tour at Historic Forest Hills Cemetery
On Memorial Day weekend, honor the soldiers and patriots of Boston who served to defend this country and keep it united. Forest Hills expert Al Maze recently celebrated his 10th year of leading tours at Forest Hills. Join him at 2 p.m. for one of his most popular: a walk exploring the stories of soldiers and survivors of the Civil War and other battles. Al will read excerpts from letters, diaries and newspaper accounts that illuminate the experiences of men and women who have served during times of war. Wear comfortable shoes and bring water and be prepared to walk about 2 miles of varied terrain. Admission is $9. Historic Forest Hill Cemetery, 95 Forest Hills Ave., Jamaica Plain. Cambridge Veterans Organization Memorial Day Parade
The Cambridge Veterans’ Organization (CVO) and Cambridge Veterans’ Services will hold their annual Memorial Day Parade and Observance. The parade will start from the Cambridge Common at 9:30 a.m. and proceed through Harvard Square down Mount Auburn St., and conclude at the Cambridge Cemetery on Coolidge Ave. Cambridge Mayor Kenneth E. Reeves and Veterans’ Director Bob Stevens will serve as parade commentators. Parade participants will include: members of the US Marine Corp, MA National Guard, veterans’ groups, elected officials, police and fire units, color guards, bands, drill teams and youth groups. Immediately following the day’s events, a collation, hosted by the Cambridge Veterans’ Organization, will be held at the V.F.W. Mt. Auburn Post, #8818, located at 688 Huron Ave. Due to the current construction of the new VFW, the parking lot of the VFW will be closed. In addition, there is very limited street parking available. Collation attendees are encouraged to ride the veterans trolleys that will be located at the cemetery. The trolleys will return you to the cemetery or the common after the collation. Open House at the Museum of Fine Arts
The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (MFA) honors Memorial Day with a FREE Open House from 10 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. Visitors are invited to take a global journey through several special exhibitions and the MFA’s wonderfully diverse collection. Events include a world music performance of percussion-infused electronic music by members of the group Electric Kulintang; storytelling by immigrants from the local Chinese community; a screening of the powerful film The Crocodile River, set in South Africa; and a presentation by the MFA’s Teen Arts Council –– a group of teenagers engaged in a year-long apprenticeship –– about their contribution to the current exhibition War and Discontent. In addition, there will be art activities for children, including travel journal and map creation. Guided gallery tours will also be offered throughout the day and are available to those who are hearing impaired, blind or have low vision. Kennedy Presidential Library to Celebrate the 90th Anniversary of John F. Kennedy’s Birth
The John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum will celebrate the 90th Anniversary of the birth of John F. Kennedy. Born on May 29, 1917 in Brookline, John F. Kennedy was one of nine children born to Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy and Joseph P. Kennedy. Among the activities taking place to mark this milestone will be: Free admission to the Museum for anyone born on May 29th; Free admission to the Museum for anyone born in 1917; Free birthday cake at 11 a.m. (while supplies last) in the Museum Pavilion; 90-cent clam chowder in the JFK Café; Free gift bag for the 90th visitor of the day; Display of the Fitzgerald family bible, holding the inscription of John F. Kennedy’s birth. General admission to the Museum at the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library is $10. Admission for seniors over the age of 62 and college students with appropriate identification is $8, and for children ages 13-17, $7. Children ages 12 and under are admitted for free. A Community Conversation to Address Violence as a Public Health Issue
How can we mobilize to address the problem of youth violence as a major public health epidemic? The Urban League of Eastern Massachusetts in collaboration with the Boston Public Health Commission and a host of community partners - including Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts- invite you to join in a series of community conversations on violence as it affects our mental, physical, and spiritual health. Tidepools & Penguins
The Grove Hall Library and the New England Aquarium invites families to come for an up-close, hands-on look at sea life in tidepools and for a talk on the the strange life of penguins right at the library! Please join us for two visits to kick off our Summer Reading Program: Wednesday, May 30 at 4 p.m. will be Tidepool exploration and a special guest face painter will attend to paint your favorite sea creature. Thursday, May 31 at 4 p.m. will be the Penguin presentation. Both are at the Grove Hall Library’s meeting room.
