COMMUNICATIONS  MANAGER

JOB DESCRIPTION  

Health Care For All, a leading Massachusetts consumer health care advocacy organization, is seeking a Communications Manager.  The Communications Manager facilitates Health Care for All’s (HCFA) public information and communication strategies to promote the organization’s visibility and identity, complement its development efforts, and enhance public understanding of HCFA’s work to make affordable and quality health care available to everyone.  The Communications Manager reports to the Director of Development and Communications. 

COMPETENCIES

  • 3-5 years strategic communications experience, including demonstrated ability to secure effective press coverage; Excellent verbal and written communication skills;
  • Superior writing skills
  • Ability to develop and implement strategic communications plans
  • Journalism and/or public policy writing experience for lay audiences and policymakers;
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail;
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team;
  • Ability to work with diverse groups of people;
  • Willingness to take initiative and leadership;
  • Ability to multi-task, operate calmly under pressure and meet deadlines;
  • Ability to think creatively;
  • Experience producing visually appealing materials;
  • In-depth knowledge of Microsoft Office, Web Content Management Systems, desktop Publishing, and Adobe design software;
  • BA degree or equivalent. 

RESPONSIBILITIES

Media Strategies

  • In consultation with program management staff, develops, writes and shapes public messages for specific program initiatives and campaigns, and ensures message is consistently delivered through range of public information strategies;
  • Develops and implements medium term communications plans for major program and policy areas;
  • Works with staff to plan, write and shape media coverage opportunities;
  • Helps decide on message, strategy, and ascertains reporters to target in seeking coverage for the reports, activities, and ideas of HCFA and its members;
  • Secures press coverage for HCFA initiatives at relevant local and national levels and seeks story placements;
  • Manages press release logistics, and concomitant follow-up work to maximize coverage and impact;
  • Work with staff to organize media-related events, such as lobby days, celebrations, and press briefings;
  • Develop strong relationships with key health and state house reporters;
  • Develop strong relationships with communications and policy staff of coalition members

 

Organizational Marketing and Branding

  • Works with staff and board to develop a visual identity and brand for the organization and ensures that all public materials reflect that image.
  • Works with Development staff to create strategic funding messages and promotional materials. 

Organizational Materials

• Writes and edits materials, such as annual reports and marketing brochures;
• Works with graphic designer to prepare materials for publication;
• Support Marketing and Information Coordinator on the HCFA print newsletter and e-newsletter;
• Communicates with program staff regarding content, focus, and final text of annual reports and marketing brochures;
• Edits work by other staff, such as reports and training materials. 

Web-site

• Participates in development of material for posting on web-site;
• Other duties as assigned.

Salary Range: $45,000-$55,000 annually
